print overrun
A printer error that occurs when the
printer cannot process a page image fast enough to keep
up with the print engine, which outputs the paper.
A software file that translates printer

commands.
printer language
The generic term for a language that
the printer uses to interpret instructions for placing text
and graphics on a page. For example, the Silentwriter
1760/1765 can interpret information by emulating the
PCL 5e printer command language, the PostScript page
description language, or the HP-GL/2 graphics
language.
Software you install on your
printer software
computer to allow you to control the printer from your
computer.
proportional font
A font in which the distance between
characters varies according to the width and shape of
the characters. See also: fixed space font.
Random-access memory. Information stored in
RAM
RAM can be accessed in an arbitrary manner. This
memory can be written to and read from.
An image that is stored as a pixel-by-
raster image
pixel representation (or bitmap).
To convert to a pixel-by-pixel representation
rasterize
(or bitmap) of an image.

A typeface residing in printer ROM. Also
resident font
called an internal font.
resolution
The number of dots used to represent an
image—usually measured in dots-per-inch (dpi). The
higher the number of dots, the finer the resolution. The
Silentwriter 1760/1765 can output either 300 dpi or 600
dpi.
Resource Saving
A printer setting that allows you to
dedicate RAM memory to the PCL 5e or PostScript
Level 2 emulation to save downloaded resources that
are normally lost when the printer switches emulations.
Read-only memory on the printer. Its contents
ROM
can be read but not changed. See also: firmware,
flash-ROM.
scaling
Resizing of outline fonts. See also: outline font.
A font displayed on the monitor screen
screen font
that matches a font on your printer. Used together they
enable WYSIWYG (What-You-See-Is-What-You-Get)
document formatting.
Sharp Edge Technology
A printer setting you use to
control the print quality of characters and line art. Sharp
Edge Technology smooths the fine gradations along the
edge of the printed image.
Single Inline Memory Module. Units of
SIMM
random access memory (RAM) that can be installed on
your printer.
soft font
A font that is stored on a diskette and can be
transferred to printer memory and stored temporarily.
Also known as temporary font.
