2 Getting Started

This section contains essential information on using the Mercury+ PE3 base board.
Electrostatic discharge ﴾ESD﴿ may damage the Mercury+ PE3 base board partially or completely. Follow
the relevant guidelines for ESD‐safe handling when operating or assembling electronic components.
NOTICE
Damage to the connectors
The connectors of the module and the base board can be damaged if the con‐
nectors are not properly aligned during installation.
NOTICE
Damage to the device when applying power
The Mercury module could physically be mounted the wrong way around on the
base board. The module and the base board can be damaged if the device is
powered on while it is connected the wrong way around.
Tip
A small golden square on the bottom left corner of Enclustra modules is provided as landmark. The
same landmark is provided on the Enclustra base boards to help orient the module in the right direction
when connecting it.
Tip
Certain early revisions of the Mercury KX1 FPGA module cannot be used in combination with Mercury+
base boards ﴾with three module connectors﴿, due to a mechanical collision caused by large capacitors
on the bottom side of the module.
Check that the mounting holes on the base board are aligned with the mounting holes of the module.
If the module cannot be mounted correctly due to a mechanical collision, contact Enclustra support.
Before first use of the Mercury+ PE3 base board with a Mercury or Mercury+ module, the following steps
must be followed:
1. Ensure that the power is switched off.
2. Mount the module on the module connector on the base board.
3. Set the DIP switches correctly ﴾refer to Section 6.5﴿.
4. Set the I/O voltage selection jumpers correctly ﴾refer to Section 5.5﴿.
5. NOTICE: Damage to the device when applying power. Ensure that the mounting holes on the
base board are aligned with the mounting holes of the module before applying power.
Power up the base board ﴾refer to Section
The power supply of the base board must be turned off in the following situations:
D‐0000‐420‐001
Align the connectors carefully before applying force on the module.
Do not use excessive force to latch the module into the connectors on the
base board.
Ensure that the mounting holes on the base board are aligned with the
mounting holes of the module.
