Step 6: Configure Community and Source IP Addresses

Use the snmp-server community command to configure the community and source IP v4/v6 addresses.
(config)#snmp-server community <community name> ip-range [<ipv4 address>
<subnet mask> |ipv6-range <ipv6 address>]
<community name> Specifies the SNMP community name. This is also referred to as a security
name in SNMPv3.
ip-range
<ipv4 address> Specifies a valid IPv4 address. IPv4 addresses should be expressed in dotted
decimal notation (for example, 10.10.10.1).
<subnet mask> Specifies the subnet mask that corresponds to a range of IPv4 addresses (network)
or a specific host. Subnet masks can be expressed in dotted decimal notation (for example,
255.255.255.0).
ipv6-range <ipv6 address> Specifies an IPv6 address. IPv6 addresses should be expressed in colon
hexadecimal format (X:X:X:X::X), for example, 2001:DB8:1::1.

Entering all zeros (0.0.0.0 0.0.0.0) for the ip address and subnet mask allows SNMP requests
from any IP range.

Optional Settings for SNMP v1/v2 and v3

Set the SNMP Engine ID (Optional)
Use the snmp-server engine-id local command to define the engine ID for the system. By default, the local
SNMP server engine ID is 8000029803xxxxxxxxxxxx (where the string of Xs represents the system's MAC
address). The engine ID can be found using the show snmp command.

NOTE
SNMPv3 requires unique engine IDs for all systems in the management domain. Adtran recom-
mends using the default engine ID to ensure the uniqueness of the numbers. Problems can occur
on a management network that contains duplicate engine IDs.

NOTE
If the local SNMP engine ID value is changed, you must save your configuration and reboot the
unit. If rebooting the unit is not feasible, you will need to reconfigure the existing users and
community names in order to apply the SNMP engine ID. Not doing so will result in a loss of
SNMP connectivity. This functionality meets the requirement of RFC 2274.
