Chapter One Introduction

The Adaptec AHA-1520 and AHA-1522 host adapters allow you to connect your
IBM PC/ AT or compatible computer to Small Computer System Interface (SCSI)
peripherals like hard disks, tape drives, and CD-ROM drives. The host adapters'
high data transfer rates
and
multitasking capabilities significantly enhance the
input/ output (I/0) performance of your AT-class computer.
The AHA-1520 and AHA-1522 are identical
except that the AHA-1522 is
equipped with a floppy disk controller. Both host adapters are referred to as the
AHA-1520/1522 in this document. System (on-screen) messages sometimes refer
to the host adapters
as
the AHA-152x.
This
manual
applies to the AHA-1520511 and AHA-1522Sl 1 versions as well as to
the standard models. The Sll models differ from the standard host adapters only
in their default 1/0 port address range settings. Throughout this
manual,
all
information applies to these models unless the Sl 1 is singled out.
THE SCSI DIRECTION KIT
The AHA-1522 is available as part of Adaptec's SCSI Direction Kit. If you pur-
chased The SCSI Direction, check to make sure that it contains the following
