Terminating Wire Rope Cables
Once the cables have been routed through the loft blocks, assuring that there are no crossed lines and
the excess is on the ground, the cables are ready for termination.
CAUTION:
In most situations the theatre consultant or architect will specify a trim height for the battens to reside
when at their lowest point.
Be sure to compensate for all attachment hardware prior to cutting the cables to their final length.
Note:
Vortek NXT hoists use 3/16" wire rope for all standard installations. Copper Nicropress sleeves and
thimbles for 3/16" wire rope are provided for use to terminate the cable end to the turnbuckle or trim
chain or RACA. Only genuine Nicopress tools with the correct crimping inserts for the provided sleeves
must be used.
WARNING:

Electrical Installation

Installation of electrical components can be performed by a competent person, but the installation
needs to be supervised by a qualified person.
Mains Connection
WARNING:
Vortek NXT hoist mains power input requires a 3-phase+Earth [ground connection to the Motor
Control Box (MCB) power supply].
• 208 or 480VAC, 3P+PE, 60Hz
• 400VCAC, 3P+PE, 50Hz
Installation
For maximum travel, before cutting the wire rope, ensure that there are
three dead wraps on the drum at the bottom of travel. More than three dead
wraps of wire rope on the drum will prevent full rated travel of the batten
and fewer than three dead wraps at the lower overtravel limit will result in
diminished lifting capacity.
Do not cut the wire rope of double-purchase units. These must be terminated at the
I-beams on the dead-off connection.
ETC recommends that only copper sleeves or zinc-coated copper sleeves be
used for termination. Aluminum sleeves are NOT acceptable for cable
terminations. Confirm the number of crimps required for the copper sleeve
by reviewing the Nicopress crimp tool manual.
Do not connect the Vortek NXT hoist electrical connection to any power
supply socket that has not been tested by a qualified individual.
