MANUAL

Air Cylinder Adjustment
injury when disassembling cylinder.
An arbor press should be used to depress the piston rod
into the cylinder approximately l (}," before when at-
tempting to remove retaining snap ring.
NOTE:
Avoid depressing piston rod beyond l
/2''
as
spring pressure increases with more compression. Care
should be taken not to damage any threaded surfaces.
(I)
Remove end plate retaining snap ring using a suitable
snap ring pliers and screw driver if necessary.
(2) Slowly release pressure on piston rod and cylinder
assembly thus allowing the end plate to come clear of
cylinder.
(3) Internal parts can miw be removed for cleaning and
inspection.
INSPECTION AND REPLACEMENT
Inspect all o-rings, cups. felts and seals, replace if
damaged. Inspect cylinder bore and piston for scoring and
replace if damaged. Refer to "'Specification" at end of this
section for spring rate tension and replace it not within
tolerances. Inspect retaining snap ring :111d replace if bent or
damaged.
REASSEMBLY
Coat all new parts with SAE 30 or 40 engine oil prior
to assembly.
Reassemble in reverse order o C disassembly.
Hold cylinder in upright position and install spring and
oil felt in position over boss on lower end plate. The same
applies when piston assembly and end plate is installed.
Place in vise or arbor press used at removal against
piston rod. Be careful not to damage seal. Compress end
plate approximately l /
16"
beyond snap ring groove and
install snap ring.
CAUTION:
Care must be taken at
assembly not to allow piston rod or air cylinder to slip out
of vise or arbor press.
INSTALLATION AND ADJUSTMENT
Install A/C compressor air cylinder belts. Assemble
lock nuts and bolts securing rod ends to mounting bracket
on engine cradle and bracket on compressor.
Connect feed and exhaust hoses.
Turn control valve handle to "ON'' pos1 tion.
To maintain correct belt tension on the A/C com-
pressor pulley belts, check the protrusion of shafts on air
cylinder as shown in Figure 16-38. The cylinder has a built-
in spring tension in addition to the air pressure and there-
fore shaft must protrude as dimensions shown when under
recommended air pressure.
With the air system under normal pressure, the pressure
regulating valve setting should be as shown in "'Specifica-
tion'' at end
of
Section 4. The shaft protrusion should be
11/4''±1/8".
If the shaft protrusion is more or less than the
i/4"± l/8" shaft protrusion is met. Tighten jam nut.
NOTE:
When new belts are installed it is necessary to
follow the above procedure. Due to possible changes taking
place during the run-in of new belts, it is recommended that
after 500 miles of vehicle operation that the shaft protru-
sion of I l/4"±1/8" be checked.
Refer to "Specifications'' at end of Section 4 for
correct pressure regulator valve setting.
