ei:igrne compartment door. The pump is removed by
disconnecting the outlet hose and removing the inlet
at the rubber hose connecting pump inlet to reservoir
outlet. Then remove the two mounting bolts. Moun-
!ing flange gasket s_hould be replaced whenever pump
1s removed. To mstall pump, reverse the above
procedure.
DISASSEMBLY
CAUTION: Before removing unit or parts of unit
to be serviced, be certain the unit is not subject to
hydraulic pressure. During disassembly, special at-
tention shou1d be given to identification of parts for
· proper reassembly.
Remove the manifold by removing the capscrews,
copper washer, manifold and 0-rings from the pump
cover.
Clamp the pump mounting flange in a machinists
vise with protective jaws. Separate the cover from the
pump body. Remove the pressure plate spring and
pressure plate. Remove the pump ring, locating pins,
rotor and vanes, and the two 0-rings.
Mount the cover in a vice. Drive out the retaining
pin with a pin punch. Protect the relief valve plug
and sub-assembly from falling from the bore. Remove
the plug, control valve and spring from the bore.
NOTE: Access to the relief valve plug and sub-
assembly may be gained through the large chamfered
hole which leads to the relief valve bore from inside
the cover.
DISASSEMBLY
Using a suitable cleaning solvent, thoroughly clean
the exterior of the power steering pump to prevent entry
of dirt or other foreign matter into the pump during
overhaul procedures.
Remove the three manifold capscrews
(23)
and wash-
ers (24). Remove manifold (22). Remove and discard
manifold gasket (25).
Remove cover mounting capscrews
(20)
and separate
the cover from the pump body
(7).
Remove pressure
plate spring (
19)
and pressure plate ( I
0).
Remove pump
ring
(13),
locating pins
(14).
rotor
(11),
vanes
(12)
and
the two o-rings (8
&
9).
Mount cover in a vise. Drive out the retaining pin
(21)
with a suitable punch. _protect the control valve plug
( 15)
and subassembly against falling from bore. Work
the plug (
15),
control valve (
17)
and spring (
18)
from
the bore.
NOTE: Access to the control valve plug and control
valve subassembly may be gained through the large
chamfered hole which leads to control valve bore from
inside the cover.
Remove outer retaining ring (I) from the pump body
(7). Support the shaft end (3) of the pump body (7) in a
two-inch straight pipe coupling and. using an arhor
press, remove the shaft (3). The shaft assembly should
drop through a slot in the press table so the shaft will
not be damaged.
Remove inner retaining ring (5) and ball bearing (4)
from shaft (2). Press the shaft seal (6) from the pump
body.
INSPECTION AND REPAIR
Wash all parts, except seals, in clear mineral solvent
and lay them aside for inspection. Replace all old seals
and o-rings at reassembly.
Inspect the surfaces of ring (
13),
rotor (
11 ),
vanes (
12),
pressure plate (
10)
and body
(7)
which are subject to
wear. Light scoring may be removed from the faces of
the body or wear plate with crocus cloth (by placing the
cloth on a flat surface). medium India stone or by. lap-
ping. Check the edges of vanes (
12)
for wear. Vanes
must not have excessive play in slots or burrs on edges.
Replace if necessary. Check each rotor slot for sticky
vanes or wear. Vanes should drop in rotor slots by their
own weight when both slot and vane are dry.
Insert the control valve (
17)
in its bore in pump cover.
There should be no binding. Check valve (
17)
and bore
for excessive wear and scoring. Replace if necessary.
Wash bearing (4) thoroughly.
Inspect and replace
bearing if worn or damaged.
Replace the shaft seal (6) at each overhaul to prevent
oil leakage. Check the drive shaft oil seal diameter for
wear and scoring. Do not install a nev,; seal on a shaft
which is worn or damaged at the oil seal diameter. Re-
place the shaft (3) if worn. Stone and polish the sharp
edges on the shaft to pre\ent damage to the seal (6).
Stone all mating surfaces of body and cover with a
