INSTALLATION
Interfacing
Your new Z-29 Terminal is designed to be used as an Input/
Output (1/0) device for a computer system. You may hook it di-
rectly or through telephone lines (via a modem) to any size
computer. The following discussion covers some of the consid-
erations for proper installation with a computer.
DTE AND DCE DEVICES
On the back panel of your Z-29 Terminal, you will find two stan-
dard connectors, marked DCE and DTE. The RS-232C stan-
dard has established two classifications of equipment: DCE
and DTE. DCE (Data Communication Equipment) devices are
computers and modems or other similar products. DTE (Data
Terminal Equipment) devices are terminals, printers, and most
other peripherals.
DTE drivers are always connected to DCE drivers and vise-
versa. Similar drivers are never connected together.
Both configurations have been provided in the Z-29 Terminal.
The DTE connector is used for connection to a computer,
either by direct wire or through a modem. The DCE connector
provides an output for other DTE devices. The following chart
illustrates the wiring and signals present for each connector.
