Simrad Echo sounder system Instruction manual
• Seafloor: Smooth
• Sea conditions: Calm
The quality of the calibration and measurements depend on the quality of the sensors
connected to the echo sounder system. The basic calibration of scale and yaw is made
by comparing the Course Over Ground (COG) and Speed Over Ground (SOG) data
from the current indicator and the GPS.
The information provided by the calibration is entered into the echo sounder software as
operational parameters. This is done automatically.

Calibration summary

The calibration process for velocity measurements involves several steps. Once the
necessary preparations have been made you must collect the calibration data, and then
finally process these.
Prerequisites
The following prerequisites must be met for a successful calibration:
• The relevant current indicator hardware has been installed in the echo sounder user
interface.
• A global positioning system (GPS) is connected to the echo sounder system. The
input from the GPS system is enabled and correct.
• A heading sensor (gyro compass) is connected to the echo sounder system. The
sensor is turned on and in normal operation.
• To prevent interference, all other hydroacoustic instruments must be turned off.
: A motion reference unit (MRU) is connected to the echo sounder system. The
Optional
sensor provides data on the KM Binary datagram format.
Procedure
1
Make the necessary preparations.
a
Select a suitable location.
b
Make sure that the echo sounder system is fully operational.
c
Collect the relevant environmental parameters.
d
Set up the echo sounder system for velocity measurements calibration.
e
Create a filing system for the RAW files.
The calibration process creates an extensive set of raw data files. You must
define and use a standard naming convention for the data files. Each file name
must be unique. The file name must contain a number of descriptive terms to
identify the main features of the data contained in the file. Such descriptive
terms may include:

110-0002398/A
