The Concept

Packages are simply the same set of system files that has been configured to offer different
features based singularly on the language/s used by the customer. There are only two
packages available – Basic and Full. The difference between the two is essentially as its
name suggests, which is, the Basic package doesn't have all the features found in Full.
The need for packages was primarily brought about by the release of PEP26, which consists
of a number of major enhancements that were meant to address the ever-apparent Meridian
Mail disparity situation. The problem is these new features are currently only available in
American English, Latin Spanish, German, & Mandarin. Therefore, customers who are using
any other language will not have those sought-after features available to them.
To further complicate matters though, PEPs are normally cumulative in nature meaning they
contain all the fixes and files from the very first PEP that was released. This means not only
will those same customers not have these new features, they will also be missing out on
critical fixes released in later PEPs. This too has been overcome with the introduction of
packages.

The Delivery Mechanism

There are basically two criteria in selecting the right package to install:
1. The language/s used
2. The current PEP installed
To prevent users from choosing the wrong package as well as to simplify the process, the
intelligent PEP was born. PEP HM040002G034 is the first PEP to have this built-in intelligence that
will automatically select the correct package to be installed based on the above two conditions. The
good news is there is no change to the installation of this PEP. For more on the installation
process, see Page 59 of the HMS400 Maintenance Guide (NNN42350-101).
