Tiberius
Tunable Femtosecond Ti:Sapphire Laser
Description
Chapter 3
3.1.
Introduction
The Tiberius laser is a soft aperture, Kerr-lens mode locked (KLM) Ti:Sapphire laser capable of producing widely
tunable, high-power femtosecond laser pulses, designed for industrial and scientific research. The Ti:Sapphire
oscillator and the pump laser are fully integrated into a temperature-stabilized, sealed, and purged housing. A
patented fast-tuning mechanism (Patent # 9,871,340) allows the Tiberius to achieve an industry-leading tuning
speed of up to 4000 nm/s.
3.2.
System Components
The system consists of the following components:
Tiberius Laser Head
The Tiberius Laser Head contains the Ti:Sapphire optical cavity and the pump laser head.
Tiberius Laser Controller
The Tiberius Laser Controller contains electronics for powering and controlling most of the components in
the Tiberius Laser Head. It also communicates with the Pump Laser Controller.
The controls on the front include a power switch and a shutter control button. The shutter button is
illuminated when the shutter is open. For safety purposes the button can only open the shutter when the
software is active, but it can always close the shutter.
Pump Laser Controller
The Pump Laser Controller powers and controls the pump laser head, to which it is permanently
attached. The Tiberius laser controller communicates with the pump via the Pump Laser Controller. The
Pump Laser Controller also provides safety interlocks. Refer to Section 5.4 for instructions on how to use
the interlocks and connection diagrams.
Chiller
The chiller extracts heat from and provides temperature stability to the Tiberius Laser Head. A typical
Tiberius installation will include an appropriate chiller. Contact Thorlabs' technical support for guidance
before using an alternative chiller.
Pure Air Circulator Unit (PACU)
The pure air circulator unit circulates the air in the Tiberius laser head to remove contamination and
moisture.
