However, if we only want to know if the activity of the tested object
exceeds the sanitary standards, measurements can still be conducted. If even in this
case the value of the activity is lower than the sanitary standards, the tested object
meets the standard for sure. And if the result is higher than normal, it is necessary
to conduct a specifying measurement as described in the next section.
2.7.2.3 Placing the detector inside the object
The most correct, all purpose and fast way to perform measurement is to
place the detector inside the object. In this case the detector is exposed to radiation
only from the tested object. You can place the detector in this mode as follows:
1. If the tested object is made up of separate parts (boxes, packages, pieces,
slabs, etc.), they should be arranged so that there is space to put the detector inside.
Material thickness on all sides of the detector should be at least 30 cm (relatively
small openings and air gaps are allowed).
2. If the tested material is piled and it is necessary to avoid external
radiation, the detector can be installed on the tested material and the container (box,
bag) with the same material can be put on its top. The size of the container should
be at least 30 cm in any direction from the detector. There should be some space
left inside to put the detector and to ensure its connectivity.
