18. Troubleshooting

Review the information in the table below to troubleshoot operating problems.
PROBLEM
I. Optical System:
LED does not light
LED operates, but field of view remains
dark
Field of view is obscured or not evenly
illuminated
Dirt or dust is visible in the field of view Dirt/dust on the eyepieces
Image looks double
Low image quality
• Image is not sharp
• Contrast is poor
• Details are indistinct
• Image glares
CAUSE
Power supply is unplugged
Brightness is too low
Fluorescence filter selector is not in a
click stop
Fluorescence filter is not suitable for
the specimen
Light path selector knob is set to the
camera position
Light path selector knob is in an inter-
mediate position
Nosepiece is not correctly engaged
Condenser is not attached properly
Nosepiece is not attached properly
An objective that falls outside of the
condenser's illumination range is used
Condenser is not properly centered
Field diaphragm is stopped down too
far
Fluorescence filter selector is not in a
click stop
Dirt/dust on the condenser surface
Dirt/dust on the specimen
Aperture diaphragm is stopped down
too far
The condenser is not well centered or
it is in a wrong height
Condenser is lowered too much
Aperture diaphragm is stopped down
too far
Nosepiece is not mounted properly
Immersion oil is not being used with an
oil immersion objective
Immersion oil contains bubbles
Recommended immersion oil is not
used
For transmitted light observation, cov-
erglass thickness must not exceed
0.17 mm

SOLUTION
Connect into the power outlet
Set brightness to a proper level
Move the selector to a click stop
Use a suitable filter
Move the knob to the eye position
Set the knob according to the observa-
tion method
Make sure that the nosepiece clicks
properly into place
Re-attach it
Push the side dovetail all the way until
it is stopped
Use a condenser to match the purpose
Center the condenser
Open the field diaphragm until it cir-
cumscribes the field of view
Move the selector to a click stop
Clean thoroughly
Open aperture diaphragm
Set the condenser according to Koe-
hler settings
Adjust the condenser height position
Open aperture diaphragm
Push the slide dovetail all the way until
it is stopped
Use immersion oil
Remove the bubbles
Use the provided immersion oil
Use a coverglass with thickness 0.17
mm
