4.5 Troubleshooting
Symptom
1. Self-diagnosis
(initialization)
cannot be started
by pressing power
switch.
2. Time program
does not start.
3. Noise is too large.
4. Drift is excessive.
Cause
1) Power cord plug
has poor contact
(with organizer or
AC adapter).
2) D
lamp cover is
2
not mounted
properly
(protection circuit
is activated).
Instrument is not in
READY status.
1) Flow cell is
contaminated.
2) Solvent is not
degassed
adequately.
3) Bubbles are
formed in flow
cell because its
back pressure is
inadequate.
4) Impurities are
contained in
solvent.
5) Trouble has
occurred on
pump.
6) D
lamp has
2
reached the end
of its lifetime.
1) Warm-up is
insufficient.
2) Liquid is leaking
through a joint.
3) Impurities are
eluted from
column.
4) Ambient
temperature
changes
significantly.
5) Use of low-purity
solvent

Visual check
Check display on
monitor screen.
Visual check
Spike noise
appears.
Spike noise
appears.
Check the solvent.
Check for regularity
in occurrence.
Check for noise at
pump stop.
Check the energy of
D
lamp, referring to
2
4.4.1.
Check power-on
time point.
Check fastening of
the joint.
Stop liquid delivery
from pump and
check what
happens.
Measure ambient

lamp
2
cover fastening screws.
Set the READY status by
ESC key or other means.
Clean the flow cell,
referring to 4.4.3.
Degas the solvent
adequately.
When flow rate is low
(below 0.2 mL/min) or the
viscosity of mobile phase
is low, a tube for back
pressure (0.25 mm I.D. × 1
m Teflon tube or the like)
should be added.
