A link between a microcomputer and a peripheral device through which data is
transmitted.

A special bar code character that provides the scanner with start and stop reading
instructions as well as a scanning direction indicator. The start character is normally at
the left end of a horizontally oriented symbol (bar code label). The stop character is
normally at the right end of a horizontally oriented symbol. For Code 39, the asterisk
(*) character is used. Depending on the software used, the users may not have to enter
the start and stop codes when they create their own bar code labels.
