Chapter 19
Water Bed Heater System

Overview

The MR-compatible Water Bed Heater System is used to control the temperature of
small animals undergoing imaging procedures. It can be used with the Model 1030,
Model 1025 or Model 1025T Monitoring and Gating Systems or in standalone mode with
or without a Fiber Optic Temperature Module. The Water Bed Heater System has been
designed to control the temperature of the water flowing to the water bed or the water
bed temperature or the body temperature of small animals.
As of the date of this manual revision the system controls the temperature of the water
flowing to the animal bed. Additional capabilities such as control of the bed or animal
temperature will be activated in the future. Some features that are not active are
presented in the software in grey rather than black text.
The SAII Water Bed Heater System consists of a Circulation Module located outside the
RF shielded magnet room and a Water Bed Heater Module located near the bore of the
magnet. The Heater Module is RF shielded and non-magnetic. It is powered from 100,
115 or 230 VAC, 50 – 60 Hz.
The Heater Module should be placed as close to the magnet bore as practical. It can
be on the SAII MR-compatible instrument stand or on a table. The optimum location will
allow the 2 m fluid tubes to connect to a water bed in the bore near the imaging volume.
Hot, cold and return water tubes connect between the Circulation Module and the Water
Bed Heater Module. In addition a duplex bi-directional fiber optic cable transmits data
and commands between the Circulation Module and the Water Bed Heater Module.

Operation in the standalone mode

In the standalone mode, the Water Bed Heater System operates with a Window's based
PC running SAII's PC-HWB software or with PC-sam software or with SAII's Fiber Optic
Temperature Module. When running in standalone mode with a PC the only option for
temperature control is controlling the temperature of the mixed water at the output of the
Heater Module.
Under development is the option to control the system using SAII's Fiber Optic
Temperature Module which can have up to 4 fiber optic temperature sensors.

Operation with a SAII monitoring and gating system

When the Water Bed Heater System is used with a Monitoring and Gating System the
PC also runs PC-sam software. In this case the PC connects to the Circulator Module
and also to the ERT Control/Gating Module using two USB ports.
Clicking on the Heater button at the bottom of PC-sam's main display opens the
HEATER window.
