IMPORTANT THINGS TO REMEMBER WHEN ACCEPTING
A CREDIT CARD
A credit card is never transferable, and only the person whose name is embossed on the front
of the credit card is authorised by the said bank to use the credit card
No other person can be authorised to use the credit card on his or her behalf or sign any
sales voucher
Always check that the credit card has not expired and that the card is signed; don't accept
any credit card that is not signed (all credit cardholders are notified in writing by their banks
to sign their credit cards upon receipt thereof)
You're not authorised by the bank to 'split' any transactions (swipe the credit card twice or
multiple times to ensure that the amounts are below your floor limit), therefore preventing
the POS device from dialling for an authorisation call; if you do this, the bank can charge
these amounts back to your account
When processing a manual transaction, or when prompted to by the POS device, call the
bank for authorisation; transactions can only be authorised by the bank and will confirm
whether the credit card has enough funds available to perform the transaction (call Standard
Bank Merchant Support on 0861 001 200 for authorisation)
Never allow any person to take control of the POS device, to enter any 'pre-approved'
authorisation code or any key functions on the POS device, unless entering his or her PIN
Always compare the signature on the sales voucher to that on the credit card;
they must match
Always check the complete embossed number on the front of the credit card to that printed
on your sales voucher; they must match
Ensure that the expiry date on the front of the credit card and that printed on the sales
voucher are the same
You're not authorised to fax or email a voucher to any cardholder to sign: the cardholder
must sign the sales voucher in your presence
Always check that the last four embossed account numbers on the front of the credit card
and the three-digit CVC numbers are 'indent-printed in reverse italics' on the signature panel
on the reverse of the credit card (the numbers must be leaning 'backwards' or to the left and
NOT straight up or to the right)
Ensure that the signature panel is 'flush' with the rest of the credit card and does not have
'raised' edges (this is a tell-tale sign that the signature panel has been altered or 'pasted' on)
