Terminal Interface via the SCM

In a SpectraComm shelf, a terminal interface is typically established with the DSU through a
password-protected Telnet connection to the SCM, or a craft connection to the SCM front panel
CTRL port. From either method, this terminal interface with the SCM provides a shelf inventory
screen from which the desired network element can be selected. Once selected, the element's Main
Menu appears. The user can then identify, configure and control the network element through
specialized menus and screens. One SCM supports a terminal interface for up to 15 units in a single
shelf.
Note
If your application includes the SCM, refer to the SCM Installation and Operation Manual for details on
Element Access and other Main Menu selections.

Making a Craft Connection via the SCM

1. To make a craft connection to the DSU via the SCM, use a VT100 or VT100-compatible
terminal with a TIA/EIA-232-F communication interface to connect the terminal to the SCM
CTRL port.
1. Set the terminal communications parameters as follows:
data rate = 9600 bps
character format: 1 start bit, 8 data bits, 1 stop bit, no parity.
2. Connect the terminal to the SCM front panel CTRL port.
3. A management session with the SCM is active as soon as the connection is made.
A menu appears with a selection for accessing shelf elements.
4. Proceed to the section on

Making a Telnet Connection

1. Make the Telnet connection to the SCM LAN port as described in the SpectraComm Manager
Card Installation and Operation Manual (GDC Publication Number 048R303-000).

3. Enter the login password. (The default password is scmadmin).
Note

no activity, that is without pressing any key on the keyboard, the unit will terminate the session.
4. A management session with the SCM is active as soon as the SCM verifies the login password.
A menu appears with a selection for accessing shelf elements.
