Power On Self Test Procedure

You should verify that a new SC800 T3 DSU is in good working order by observing the automatic
Power On Self Test (POST) performed by the unit on startup. Once the unit is inserted in the shelf
slot, the POST begins. Observe the front panel to verify operational status:
1. All LEDs flash on and off, indicating the start of the POST test. This test allows you to check
the operation of the microprocessor, RAM, code checksum, etc. It will also automatically
perform a data path test by implementing a local loopback with self-test pattern.
2.
If any errors are detected during this test, the ALM LED blinks and a POST failure (card
failure) is reported.
3. At the end of a successful test sequence, all LEDs extinguish except for the ON LED.
In the event of a failed POST:
For SpectraComm shelf, install spare SC800 T3 DSU in the shelf slot and repeat the test.
For SpectraComm standalone enclosure, return the enclosure and card to GDC for repair.
Note
If you require assistance, contact General DataComm Service at the telephone number listed in the
of this manual. Do not attempt to repair the SC800 T3 DSU.

Dedicated Remote Wake-Up Procedure

Setting up Masters and Remotes
When a DSU has the Remote Option Switch S1-1 set to OFF and is installed in a shelf with
an SCM, it is always a master unit.
When a DSU has the Remote Option Switch S1-1 set to ON and is installed in a shelf with or
without an SCM, it is always a remote unit.
Establishing DCC Communications
When a master SC 800 T3 DSU is installed in a shelf with an SCM, it can establish a Diagnostic
Communication Channel (DCC) to a remote SC 800 T3 DSU. The DCC enables you to perform
terminal interface management of the remote DSU from the master DSU site. Once the DSUs are
physically installed at both ends of the link, use the following procedure to establish the selected
type of DCC and "wake up" the far end DSU so that it operates as a dedicated remote unit.
1. Begin a terminal interface session with the SCM, using either a VT100 terminal or a computer
running the Telnet protocol.
2. If the two DSUs are being installed as a local, wire-line connection, at the master DSU, set
Switch S1-1 to OFF and then set Switch S1-4 to ON. This configures the DSU as a master
unit using Internal Timing.
At the remote DSU, set Switch S1-1 to ON, and then set Switch S1-4 to OFF for operation as
a remote. This configures the DSU as a remote unit using Recovered Timing.
3. The master DSU automatically initiates the wake up procedure with the remote DSU. The
wake up procedure opens the DCC and sets the relevant configuration options at the remote to
be compatible with the type of DCC selected at the master.
4. Proceed to the Shelf Inventory screen. If the wake up procedure has been successful, a + sign
is now displayed next to the slot number of the master DSU.
