The     i nformation     p resented     i n     t his     s ection     i s

tions     s uch     a s     p oor     h andling,     l oss     o f
control,     o r     f ire     h azards.     F or     p ermanent-
ly     m ounted     m odels,     y our     d ealer     o r     o th-
er   p erson   e xperienced   i n   p roper   r igging
should     m ount     t he     m otor.
 
Mounting     t he     o utboard     m otor  
The     o utboard     m otor     s hould     b e     m ounted     s o
that     t he     b oat     i s     w ell     b alanced.     O therwise,     t he
boat     c ould     b e     h ard     t o     s teer.     F or     s ingle-en-
gine     b oats,     m ount     t he     o utboard     m otor     o n     t he
centerline     ( keel     l ine)     o f     t he     b oat.

The     m ounting     h eight     o f     y our     o utboard     m otor
 
affects     i ts     e fficiency     a nd     r eliability.     I f     i t     i s
 
mounted     t oo     h igh,     p ropeller     v entilation     m ay
occur,     w hich     w ill     r educe     p ropulsion     d ue     t o
 
excessive     p ropeller     s lip,     a nd     t he     w ater     i n-
 
takes     f or     t he     c ooling     s ystem     m ay     n ot     g et     a d-
 
equate     w ater     s upply,     w hich     c an     c ause
 
engine     o verheating.     I f     t he     e ngine     i s     m ounted
 
 
too   l ow,   w ater   r esistance   ( drag)   w ill   i ncrease,
thereby     r educing     e ngine     e fficiency     a nd     p er-
 
formance.
Most     c ommonly,     o utboard     m otor     s hould     b e
mounted     s o     t hat     t he     a nti-cavitation     p late     i s     i n
 
alignment     w ith     t he     b ottom     o f     t he     b oat.     T he
 
optimum     m ounting     h eight     o f     t he     o utboard
 
motor     i s     a ffected     b y     t he     b oat/motor     c ombina-
 
tion     a nd     t he     d esired     u se.     T est     r uns     a t     d iffer-
ent     h eights     c an     h elp     d etermine     t he     o ptimum
mounting     h eight.     C onsult     y our     O utboards     d eal-
er     o r     b oat     m anufacturer     f or     f urther     i nforma-
tion     o n     d etermining     t he     p roper     m ounting
