Digital Modulation Mode (N5172B/82B RF Vector Models w/ Option 65x Only)

In these modes, the signal generator modulates a CW signal with I/Q modulation.
This I/Q modulation is only available on N5172B/82B RF vector models equipped with an
internal ARB Baseband Generator (Option 65x).
The following Digital Modulation modes are available:
— Dual ARB mode is used to control the playback sequence of waveform segments that have been
written into the ARB memory located on the internal baseband generator. These waveform
segments can be generated by the internal baseband generator using the
ARB Custom Modulation mode or downloaded through a remote interface into ARB memory.

— ARB Custom Modulation mode can produce a single–modulated carrier or multiple–modulated
carriers. Each modulated carrier waveform must be calculated and generated before it can be
output; this signal generation occurs on the internal baseband generator. Once a waveform has
been created, it can be stored and recalled, which enables repeatable playback of test signals.

— Real-Time AWGN mode enables you to apply Additive White Gaussian Noise (AWGN) to a
carrier in real time while the modulating waveform plays in the Dual ARB waveform player.

— Real-Time Phase Noise Impairment mode allows you to degrade the phase noise performance
of the signal generator by controlling two frequency points and an amplitude value. The signal
generator adds this phase noise to the phase noise normally produced by the signal generator.

— Baseband Operating mode can be one of three different ARB FPGA images; each ARB FPGA
image changes the supported features available while in the selected mode. The selected
Baseband Operating Mode is a persistent instrument setting and its value is maintained through
power cycles, Preset, or *RST. The default Baseband Operating Mode is set to Primary and can
