Speed measurements on cars/trucks

i
The combi sensor can be attached with the engine
stopped or idling. Optimum speed measurement is
achieved if the engine vibration is not damped by
rubber-mounted components between the engine
and the attachment location.
1. Attach the combi sensor with the magnetic base to
a metal part of the engine, e.g. bolt heads, flat metal
components on the engine or even the oil drain plug.
2. Allow the engine to idle.
 Idling speed has been detected if the LED on the
combi sensor and the status LED on the BEA 040
light (yellow) within 3 - 10 seconds.
i
A different attachment location must be selected if
the LEDs do not light as indicated.
3. Set the engine to high speed and maintain for at
least five seconds.
 Higher speed has been detected if the LED on
the combi sensor and the status LED on the
BEA 040 light (green) after five seconds.
i
For gasoline engines the higher speed must be
between 2000 min-1 and 6000 min-1; in the case
of diesel engines between 70 % and 90 % of the
breakaway speed.
i
Following detection of the higher speed, the LED of
the combi sensor and the status LED of the BEA 040
always stay green whatever the speed.

Speed measurements on motorcycles

i
The mode (2-stroke/4-stroke) must be correctly set
on the BEA 040 for motorcycle measurements.
i
The combi sensor is to be attached to the
motorcycle in the vicinity of, but not necessarily on,
the engine. A flat resting surface for the magnetic
base of the combi sensor must be ensured.
1. Attach the combi sensor with the magnetic base to
a metal part of the engine, e.g. bolt heads, flat metal
components on the engine.
2. Allow the engine to idle.
 Idling speed has been detected if the LED on the
combi sensor and the status LED on the BEA 040
light (yellow) after fifteen seconds.
i
A different attachment location must be selected if
the LEDs do not light as indicated.

3. Set the engine speed to in excess of 4000 min
several seconds.
 Higher speed has been detected if the LED on
the combi sensor and the status LED on the
BEA 040 light (green).
i
Following detection of the higher speed, the LED of
the combi sensor and the status LED of the BEA 040
always stay green whatever the speed.

Connecting the BEA 040 to Bosch
testers
i
When connecting the BEA 040 to the
BEA 030/055/060/065 a power pack does not
need to be connected as power is supplied to the
BEA 040 via the connecting cable 1 684 463 810.
