ABS (A ntilock Brake System )

The A B S p re ve n ts th e w h e e ls fro m
lo ckin g up above a v e h icle sp e e d o f
a p p ro x im a te ly 3 k m /h (2 m ph) in d e ­
p e n d e n t o f road surface c o n d itio n s . It
is necessary, how ever, th a t th e ve h i­
cle speed reaches at least 8 k m /h
(5 m ph) b e fore c o m m e n c in g to brake.
A t the in sta n t one o f th e w h e e ls is
a b o u t to lo ck up, you w ill feel a slig h t
pu lsa tion in the bra ke pedal, in d ic a t­
ing tha t the A B S is in th e re g u la tin g
m ode.
On slip p e ry road su rfa ce s, th e A BS
w ill re s p o n d even w ith on ly s lig h t
brake pedal p re ssu re . The pu lsa ting
brake pedal can be an in d ica tio n o f
hazardous road c o n d itio n s , and it
fu n c tio n s as a re m in d e r to ta ke extra
care w hile driving.
The A BS in d ic a to r lam p in th e in s tru ­
m en t c lu s te r co m e s on w ith th e key in
s te e rin g lo ck p o s itio n 2 and sho uld
g o o u t w ith the en gine running.
If the ch a rg in g volta ge fa lls b e lo w
10 volts, th e in d ic a to r lam p c o m e s on
and the A B S is s w itc h e d off. W hen
th e volta ge is above th is value again,
the in d ica to r lam p sh o u ld go o u t and
th e A B S w ill be opera tiona l.
If th e A B S in d ic a to r lam p d o e s n o t go
o u t o r c o m e s on w h ile d rivin g , it in d i­
ca te s th a t th e A B S has d e te c te d a
m a lfu n ctio n and has s w itc h e d off. In
th is case, th e bra ke system fu n c tio n s
in the usual m anner, b u t w ith o u t a n ti­
lo ck assista n ce . W e re co m m e n d th a t
you visit an a u th o rize d M E R C ED ES-

have th e sys te m ch e cke d .
W arning!
Even the ABS cannot prevent the
natural laws of physics from a c t­
ing on th e vehicle. The ABS can ­
not prevent accid en ts, including
th ose resulting from excessive
speed in turns, follow ing an o ther
vehicle to o closely, or aq u ap la n ­
ing. Only a safe, a tte n tiv e , and
skillful driver can prevent a c c i­
dents. The ca p a b ilitie s of an ABS
equ ip p ed car m ust never be
explo ited in a reckless or d an g e r­
ous m anner which could je o p a r­
dize th e u ser's sa fety or th e sa f­
e ty of others.

The bra ke pad w e ar in d ic a to r lam p in

w hen th e key is tu rn e d to ste e rin g
lo ck p o s itio n 2 and it sh o u ld go o u t
w h e n th e e n gine is run ning. If th e in d i­
c a to r lam p lig h ts up d u rin g braking,
th is s h o w s th a t the fro n t w heel brake
pads are w o rn dow n.

Brake W arning Lamp

The bra ke w a rn in g lam p w ill co m e on
if in s u ffic ie n t brake fluid is in the
re s e rv o ir (key in s te e rin g lo ck p o s i­
tio n 2 and p a rkin g brake released).
W hen th e m in im um m ark on the
re s e rv o ir is rea che d, have th e brake
sys te m ch e c k e d (fo r bra ke pad th ic k ­
ness and leaks).

bra ke w a rn in g lam p c o m e s on, and
