ABS (A ntilock Brake System )

The A B S p re ve n ts th e w h e e ls from
lo ckin g up above a sp e e d of ap pro x.
3 k m /h (2 m ph) in d e p e n d e n t o f road
surface c o n d itio n s . It is necessary,
how ever, th a t a sp e e d o f approx.
k m /h (5 m ph) has been e x ce e d e d at

least on ce a fte r s ta rt-u p .
A t the in sta n t one o f th e w h e e ls is
a b o u t to lo c k up, you w ill feel a s lig h t
p u lsa tio n in th e bra ke pedal, in d ic a t­
ing th a t th e A B S is in th e re g u la tin g
m ode.
On slip p e ry road su rfa ce s, th e A B S
w ill re s p o n d even w ith o n ly s lig h t
brake pedal p re ssu re . The p u lsa ting
b ra ke pedal can be an in d ica tio n of
ha zard ous road c o n d itio n s , and it
fu n c tio n s as a re m in d e r to ta ke extra
care w hile driving.
The A B S in d ic a to r lam p in th e in s tru ­

s te e rin g lo c k p o s itio n
and sho uld

go o u t w ith th e e n gine running.
If the ch a rg in g vo lta g e fa lls be lo w
volts, th e in d ic a to r lam p c o m e s on
1 0
and the A B S is s w itc h e d off. W hen
the v olta ge is above th is value again,
th e in d ic a to r lam p sh o u ld go o u t and
the A B S w ill be opera tiona l.
If th e A B S in d ic a to r lam p d o e s n o t go
o u t o r c o m e s on w h ile driving , it in d i­
ca te s th a t th e A B S has d e te c te d a
m a lfu n c tio n and has s w itc h e d off. In
th is case, th e bra ke syste m fu n c tio n s
in the usual m anner, b u t w ith o u t a n ti­
lo ck a ssista n ce . W e re co m m e n d th a t
you v is it an a u th o riz e d M ER C ED ES-
BENZ de a le r as soo n as p o s s ib le to
have the s yste m c h e cke d .
W arning!
Even th e ABS cann o t p reven t the
natural law s of physics from acting
on th e vehicle. The AB S cannot
prevent accid en ts, including those
resulting from excessive sp eed in
turns, follow ing a n o th e r vehicle to o
closely, or aquaplaning. Only a safe,
a tte n tiv e , and skillful driver can
prevent accid en ts. The ca p a b ilitie s
of an ABS eq u ip p ed ca r m ust never
be ex p lo ite d in a reckless or d an ger­
ous m anner which could jeo p a rd ize
th e u ser's sa fe ty o r th e sa fety of
others.

pads are w o rn dow n.

as so o n as p o ssib le .

Brake W arning Lamp

The b ra ke w a rn in g lam p w ill co m e on
if in s u ffic ie n t bra ke flu id is in the
re s e rv o ir (key in s te e rin g lo c k p o s i­
tio n
and p a rkin g brake released).

W hen th e m in im um m ark on the
re s e rv o ir is rea che d, have th e brake
s yste m ch e c k e d (bra ke pad th ic k ­
ness, leaks).
To te s t th e bra ke w a rn in g lamp,
d e p re s s th e p a rkin g brake pedal. Turn
key in s te e rin g lo ck to p o s itio n
the bra ke w a rn in g lam p sh o u ld com e
on; release p a rkin g bra ke and the
lam p s h o u ld go out.
