Fuel Pressure Gauge
A fuel pressure gauge (figure 5.8) is incorporated on the engine-mounted fuel system. The
fuel pressure gauge is located on the outlet side of the engine-mounted fuel filter. The primary
purpose of this fuel pressure gauge is to help the installer ensure that the fuel system that
supplies the engine's fuel injection pump will maintain a poshive inlet pressure (of 1.5 psi,
minimum) to the injection pump no matter what the load is on the generator and how clean
the fuel filter is.
NOTE: A positive inlet pressure of 1.5 pSI IS minimum. An ideal fuel
supply should allow 2.5 to 3.5 psi to be present .
The absence of positive pressure usually indicates
excessive fuel flow restriction in the fuel piping
from the fuel tank to the engine. This can fre-
quently be cured with larger lines and fewer and
larger fittings. When the combination of distance
and lifting height for the primary fitter is too great
for the fuel lift pump on the engine to overcome
and maintain a positive pressure, then an auxiliary
booster fuel pump and/or fuel day tank is required.
Otherwise poor operating performance will resutt.
Typical symptoms of the generator's engine run-
ning without positive fuel pressure at the inlet of
the injection pump are listed below.
A. the presence of white exhaust smoke and
fuel-laden exhaust.
B.
A rough running engine.

C. Skipping and/or backfiring noises coming from the exhaust.
D. Loss of engine power and rpm.
E. The inability of the engine to carry the generator's load.
The problems outlined above will eventually cause internal wear damage to the injection pump
and to the injector nozzles. This type of damage and that resutting from fuel contamination are
not warrantable issues.
NOTE: For fuel tanks that are located below the fuel lift pump, extend
the return line below the minimum fuel level in the tank. This will prevent
airation problems due to fuel syphoning out of the system through the
return, which causes operating problems such as A-E.
