8. Operation
n Driving
1. The engine should be running. If not, start it
from the platform control box as described
previously.
Figure 8.9
2. Set the Speed switch to turtle (slow) (see
Figure 8.9) if you are going to be driving
close to other objects or need to move the
S3970RT / S3370RT / S2770RT very slowly
for other reasons.
NOTE
Setting the SPEED to rabbit doubles the travel
speed. (See the Specifications chapter for
speeds of different models.)
3. Set the Lift/Drive Selector switch to drive
(see Figure 8.9).
WARNING
The S3970RT / S3370RT / S2770RT is about
to move. If you have to make an emergency
stop, release the Joystick Controller and
sharply strike the Emergency Stop switch
straight in.
To make a normal stop, slowly move the
Joystick Controller to its centered neutral
position then release it.
4. Squeeze and hold the Safety Control
against the Joystick Controller (see
Figure 8.9).
5. Push the Joystick Controller (see Figure
8.18) slowly forward or pull it slowly
backward, depending on which way you want
to go. The further you move the joystick the
faster the S3970RT / S3370RT / S2770RT
moves.
page 8 - 4
6. To make a right or left turn, press and hold
the Steering rocker-switch on top of the
Joystick Controller (see Figure 8.9).
NOTE
When you release the Steering rocker-switch
the steering wheels remain pointed in the
direction you left them. They do not return to
straight ahead the way automobile wheels do.
You will have to press the opposite side of the
Steering rocker-switch to return to straight
line travel. In tight spots you should stop the
S3970RT / S3370RT / S2770RT, turn the wheels
the direction you want to go, then, after you have
aimed the steering wheels, squeeze the Safety
Control and move the Joystick Controller
slowly forward or backward.

Variable Maximum Drive Speed
The ma chines fea ture a vari able max i mum drive
speed with height. As the el e va tion gets higher the
drive speed re duces.
Stowed, and up to the el e va tion height, the max i -
mum drive speed is the stowed drive speed. Above
the el e va tion height max i mum drive speed re duces
as the height in creases. At max i mum el e va tion the
max i mum drive speed is the creep speed. At
heights above el e va tion but less than full height
this gives a sig nif i cant in crease in the max i mum
drive speed and cor re spond ing in creases in pro -
duc tiv ity (see ex am ple in Ta ble 1 below).

Ramp Off
The con trols fea ture a small amount of "ramp off". If
the trig ger Safety Con trol is re leased or the Joy -
stick is abruptly moved to cen tre the drive speed
will be re duced over a short pe riod of time. This
makes de cel er a tion much smoother. There is a
small amount of over run of the ma chine. Take care
to al low suf fi cient stop ping dis tance from ob jects.
