8.16.7 Engine coolant – Sample extraction and analysis
Preconditions
☑ MTU Fluids and Lubricants Specifications (A001061/..) are available.
Special tools, Material, Spare parts
Designation / Use
MTU test kit
DANGER
Components are moving or rotating.
Risk of crushing, danger of parts of the body being caught or pulled in!
• Operate the engine at low load only. Keep clear of the danger zone of the engine.
WARNING
Coolant is hot and under pressure.
Risk of injury and scalding!
• Let the engine cool down.
• Wear protective clothing, gloves, and goggles / safety mask.
WARNING
High level of engine noise when the engine is running.
Risk of damage to hearing!
• Wear ear protectors.
Engine coolant – Sample extrac-
tion and analysis
1.
Open drain valve on engine coolant pump el-
bow with the engine running.
2.
Drain off approx. 1 liter engine coolant.
Result:
Sampling point is clean.
3.
Drain approx. 1 liter engine oil into a clean
container.
4.
Tighten shut-off cock (arrow) with torque wrench to the specified tightening torque.

Using the equipment and chemicals of the MTU test kit, examine engine coolant for:
• antifreeze concentration
• concentration of corrosion protection oil
• pH value
6.
