Wire Resistance Calibration

Benefits of Wire Resistance Calibration

The Keysight BT2152A Self-Discharge Analyzer can measure and compensate for cable resistance
with the wire resistance calibration procedure. Wire resistance should be calibrated on a regular
interval as determined by the
Using wire resistance calibration lets you run discharge measurements with better performance when
l
using programmable resistance, because the cable wiring will be taken into account.
This only applies if the RJ45 cables on the back of the BT2152A have not been removed or
reseated. Otherwise, programmable output resistance cannot be guaranteed.
With wire resistance calibration, the voltage measurement is adjusted to reflect the voltage at the end
l
of the cable (the actual cell voltage) instead of the voltage at the RJ45 connector.
After running wire resistance calibration and saving the values, you can query the present resistance

values using the
istance values to non-volatile memory, you can now compare the present values to the previous val-
ues. This method lets you capture any resistance drifts over time. When the contact resistances of a
specific channel/cell probe becomes too high (indicating overuse) it should be replaced.
To query the previously saved resistance values, you must first load them into the instru-
ment using
to save the present values before you load any previous values.

Wire Resistance Compensation Constraints

The cable resistance measurement error is bounded by ± 20 mΩ over the supported range of 0Ω to 5Ω.
Note that the wire resistance compensation only holds for the insertion of the RJ-45 at the instrument
end and for the contact probes that are used to short the wires at the DUT end. If the DUT contact
probes change and/or the RJ45 on the instrument end is unplugged, reinserted, or reseated, the
specifications will not hold because of varying contact resistance.

Wire Resistance Calibration Procedure

IMPORTANT Disconnect all LI cells from the cell cables before performing the wire resistance
calibration.
For convenience, you can program the BT2152A to measure the cell wire resistances and enter the
resistance measurements. This is the recommended method of wire resistance calibration, which
requires you to disconnect all LI cells from the cell wires and then short the ends of the cell wires.
If, for some reason you cannot disconnect and short the ends of the cell wires, you have the option of
measuring the cable resistances using an external DMM and the entering the results into the BT2152A
using the
