Buffer Allocation Considerations

Keep these items in m ind when allocating memory.
Do not allocate m ore memory than what is available.
Free memory from one buffer before adding it to another buffer.
Reallocate all the buffers if reallocating any buffer.
Send all buffer (re)alloc ations in one pac ket. The printer evaluates each individual buffer
allocation s eparately. If one buffer allocation is invalid, the entire pac ket is invalid. If a
defined buffer size exceeds the maximum value, an error occurs. However, no inform ation is
lost.
W henever the printer acc epts a m emory configuration pac ket, it takes effec t imm ediately,
causing a printer res et. Any inform ation contained in the buffers is lost. Resend the form ats,
batches, graphics, or fonts to the printer.
W hen remapping the im age buffer, make sure the length and width specified in the form at
header are not too large for the current image buffer. For example, remapping for a
4 x 4 inch label and then printing a 4 x 6 inch label caus es an error, until the format header is
c hanged or the image buffer is increas ed.

Memory Considerations with Downloaded TrueType Fonts

Save the fonts to flash m em ory for optim al performance with downloaded fonts. No mem ory
configuration packets are necess ary s inc e flas h m emory cannot be realloc ated.
A b o u t F l a s h M e m o r y
Items s tored in flash m em ory are saved when the printer is turned off. Flash me mory cannot be
re allocate d.
Flash memory can contain form ats , fonts, graphic s, ADK scripts , and check digits. Store form ats
in flash to us e the printer offline (not c onnected to a host). W hen form ats, graphics, and check
digits are saved in flash (a c opy is automatically placed in RAM). Any of the packets saved in
flash cannot exceed the memory available in RAM. For this reason, s tore fonts or ADK scripts
in flash me mory. (Fonts and ADK sc ripts s aved in flash are not copied into RAM.)
Before s ending packets to flash memory, it mus t be formatted.

Formatting Flash Memory

Form atting flash mem ory is re quire d once during initial printe r se tup. From the Main Menu,
select Setup, Flash Mem ory, then Form at Flas h. The proc ess takes a few minutes.
Note :
W hen form atting flash memory, all packets (formats, fonts, graphics, etc.) stored in flash
mem ory are deleted and m us t be res ent to the printer.

Checking Available Flash Memory

To check the amount of available flas h m emory in the printer, from the Main Menu, Select Setup,
Flash Memory, then Unused Flas h. The number (in bytes) of available flas h m emory is shown.
Divide this number by 1024 to get the number of available kilobytes and make sure the font or
ADK script files do not exc eed this am ount. For exam ple, if the printer displays "Unused Flash
10223616," there is 9984K (9.75 Meg) of available flash mem ory for fonts or ADK sc ript files.
Flash memory cannot be reallocated.
