FORC E D LANDINGS
If all attempts to restart the engi n e fail and a forced landing i s
imminent, sel e ct a sui t able fi e l d and prepare for the l a nding as
di s cussed under the Emergency Landi n g Wi t hout Engine Power
checkl i s t. Transmi t Mayday message on 1 21 .5 MHz gi v i n g l o cati o n
and intenti o ns and squawk 7700.
Before attempting an "off airport" landing wi t h engine power
available, one should fl y over the l a nding area at a safe but low
al t i t ude to inspect the terrain for obstructi o ns and surface
condi t i o ns, proceeding as di s cussed under the Precauti o nary
Landing Wi t h Engine Power checkli s t.
Prepare for ditching by securing or jetti s oning heavy objects
l o cated i n the baggage area,and collect fol d ed coats for protecti o n
of occupants' face at touchdown. Transmi t Mayday message on
1 21 .5 MHz gi v i n g l o cation and intenti o ns and squawk 7700. Avoi d
a l a ndi n g fl a re because of di f fi c ul t y i n judgi n g height over a water
surface. The checkli s t assumes the availabili t y of power to make a
precauti o nary water l a nding. I f power i s not avai l able, use of the
ai r speeds noted wi t h minimum fl a p extensi o n wi l l provi d e a more
favorable atti t ude for a power off di t ching.
In a forced l a ndi n g si t uati o n, do not set the AVIONICS MASTER
swi t ch or the airpl a ne MASTER swi t ch to the OFF posi t i o n until a
l a ndi n g i s assured. When these swi t ches are i n the OFF posi t i o n,
the airpl a ne el e ctri c al systems are de-energi z ed.
Before performing a forced landing, especially in remote and
mountainous areas, acti v ate the EL T transmi t ter by posi t ioning the
cockpi t -mounted swi t ch to the ON posi t i o n. For complete
informati o n on EL T operati o n, refer to the Supplements, Secti o n 9.
LANDING WITHOUT ELEVATOR CON� T ROL
Trim for hori z ontal fl i g ht (wi t h an airspeed of approximatel y 65
KIAS and flaps set to 200) by usi n g throttle and elevator trim
controls. Then
do not change the elevator trim control setting;1
control the gli d e angle by adjusting power exclusi v el y .
