CESSNA
MODEL 1 72S
SHORT FIELD LANDING
For a short fi e l d landing i n smooth air condi t i o ns, make an
approach at 61 KIAS wi t h
the gli d e path. (Sl i g htl y hi g her approach speeds should be used
under turbulent air condi t ions.) After al l approach obstacl e s are
cl e ared, progressi v el y reduce power and maintai n the approach
speed by lowering the nose of the airpl a ne. Touchdown shoul d be
made wi t h power off and on the mai n wheel s fi r st. Immediately after
touchdown, l o wer the nose wheel and appl y heavy braking as
required. For maximum brake effecti v eness, retract the fl a ps, hold
the control wheel full back, and appl y maximum brake pressure
wi t hout sli d ing the tires.
CROSSWIND LAN DING
When l a nding in a strong crosswi n d, use the mInimum fl a p
setting requi r ed for the fi e l d length. I f fl a p settings greater than
are used i n si d eslips wi t h full rudder defl e ction, some elevator
oscillation may be fel t at normal approach speeds. However, this
does not affect control of the airpl a ne. Al t hough the crab or
combinati o n method of dri f t correction may be used, the wing low
method gi v es the best control. After touchdown, hol d a strai g ht
course wi t h the steerable nose wheel and occasional braking if
necessary.
The maximum allowable crosswi n d vel o ci t y i s dependent upon
pil o t capabili t y as well as airpl a ne limi t ati o ns. Operation in direct
crosswi n ds of 1 5 knots has been demonstrated.
BALKED LAN DING
In a bal k ed landing (go-around) climb, reduce the fl a p setting to
immedi a tel y after full power i s appl i ed. If obstacles must be
cl e ared duri n g the go-around cl i mb, reduce the wing fl a p setting to
200
and maintai n a safe airspeed until the obstacl e s are cl e ared.
Above
feet, lean the mi x ture to obtain maximum RPM. After
1 00
cl e aring any obstacl e s, the fl a ps may be retracted as the airpl a ne
3000
accelerates to the normal flaps up climb speed.
