SECTION 4
NORMAL PROCEDURES
Should the engine tend to die after starting, turn on the auxiliary
fuel pump temporaril y and adjust the throttle and/or mi x ture as
necessary to keep the engine running. I n the event of over priming
or fl o oding, turn off the auxiliary fuel pump, open the throttle from
1/2 to full open, and continue cranki n g wi t h the mi x ture full lean.
IWhen the engine starts, smoothly advance the mixture control to full
ri c h and retard the throttle to desired idle speed.
I f the engine i s under primed (most likely i n col d weather wi t h a
Icol d engine) i t will not start at all, and addi t i o nal priming will be
necessary.
I After starti n g, i f the oil pressure gage does not begin to show
pressure wi t hin 30 seconds i n the summer time and approximatel y
one minute in very col d weather, stop the engine and investigate.
Lack of oil pressure can cause serious engine damage.

R ECOMMENDED STARTE R D UTY CYCLE
Crank the starter for 1 0 seconds followed by a 20 second cool
down peri o d. This cycl e can be repeated two addi t i o nal times,
foll o wed by a ten minute cool down peri o d before resuming
cranki n g. After cool down, crank the starter again, three cycl e s of
1 0 seconds foll o wed by 20 seconds of cool down. If the engine still
fail s to start, an investi g ati o n to determine the cause shoul d be
i n i t i a ted.
