fl y i n g the airpl a ne, as well as revi e wed on a regul a r basi s to keep
pilot' s knowl e dge of procedures fresh.
E N GI N E FAI L U R E
If an engine failure occurs duri n g the takeoff roll, the most
important thing to do i s stop the airpl a ne on the remaining runway.
Those extra i t ems on the checkli s t will provi d e added safety after a
failure of thi s type.
Prompt lowering of the nose to maintai n airspeed and establish a
gli d e atti t ude i s the first response to an engine failure after takeoff.
I n most cases, the l a nding should be pl a nned strai g ht ahead wi t h
only small changes in directi o n to avoi d obstructi o ns. Al t i t ude and
airspeed are sel d om suffi c i e nt to execute a 1 800 gli d ing turn
necessary to return to the runway. The checkli s t procedures assume
that adequate time exi s ts to secure the fuel and igni t i o n systems
prior to touchdown.
