Software Installation and Configuration
N O TE
The GPIB Address String
When programming the 34980A/34945A over GPIB, the instrument's GPIB
address is included in the address string as shown below:
GPIB0::9::INSTR
Changing the GPIB Address
The 34980A GPIB address can be changed from the front panel (see note
above) or programmatically using the command:
SYSTem:COMMunicate:GPIB:ADDRess < address >
The command can be abbreviated by including only the upper-case letters in
the command syntax. The command can be sent from the 'Interactive IO' win-
dow, or from the 'SCPI Command Interface' window - via a LAN connection.
When the address is changed, the new GPIB address IS NOT updated in Con-
nection Expert if the instrument was previously configured.
From the Connection Expert window, highlight the instrument whose address
was changed and then select 'Change Properties ...". Within the configurable
properties window, change the address to the new address setting and select
'OK' (Figure 3-6).
Configuring the USB Interface
The 34980A is a high-speed USB 2.0 device. Connection to the instrument is through
the Type B USB connector located on the instrument rear panel.
N O TE
The first time the 34980A is connected to the PC via the USB cable, a "hardware wiz-
ard" utility within the PC may start and prompt you for an installation CD that came
with the product. There is no installation software for the USB interface other than

If the 34980A GPIB address is unknown, the address can be queried/set from the
instrument front panel by: (1) pressing the 'Utility' key, (2) selecting the "Remote
I/O" menu ('Enter' key), (3) selecting the 'GPIB' interface (control knob/'Enter'
key), (4) enabling the GPIB interface ("Yes" - 'Enter' key).
The 34980A is an Agilent web-enabled instrument that offers a user interface
which requires no user-installed IO drivers. Access to the instrument via the Web
interface, however, is only available through the LAN connection.
