Most IC manifolds will have two columns: a guard column and an analytical column. The
purpose of the guard column is to protect the analytical column. Any unwanted
particulates will be retained in the guard column. Some organic compounds, oils and
grease that may damage the packing material of the columns would be trapped in the
guard column before getting to the analytical column.
