When lubricat ing con trol arm ba ll joints, li se only the spec ia l long-
life grease slich as Mu lti-M il eage Lub rica nt, Part Number 2525035
or equi va lent.
Procedure
A. Clean the acc umul ated dirt a nd grease from the o ut s ide s urface
of the seal to permit co mple te inspect ion.
B. Wipe off the outside s urface of the grease fitling to rem ove
acc umu lated dirt from the grease inl et a rea to avo id s ubseq ue nt
grease contam inat io n.
C. Fill and flush the joints with lubricant.
D. Wipe ofT a ny excess grease from the exte ri or surfaces or ba ll
j o in ts and adjacent compone nt s urfaces.
STOP F I LLING WHEN G REASE BEGINS TO FLOW
FREELY FROM THE BL EED AREAS AT TH E BASE OF
THE SEAL. OR I F THE SEALS BEGIN TO BALLOON.
Propeller Shaft Universal Joints
U ni ve rsa l j o int sea ls s ho uld be inspected ror ex te rna l lea ks or
damage twice a yea r. If exte rn a l leaks or da mage is ev ident. the
uni versal joint s hou ld be replaced. Relubrication is not recom-
mended .
Manual Steering
Ca rs e quipped w ith manua l steering use a rec ircu lat ing ba ll -nut
type of s teer ing gear. Th is gear is permanent ly lubricated at the
fa c to ry . period ic lubrication is not required.
Upper and Lower Control Arm Bushings
Upper a nd lower co ntro l arm bus hi ngs sho uld be in spec ted for an
off center condition of inner metal in relation to o uter metal. Total
failure is ev ide nt by excessive movement wi thin bushing and no ise
ca used by me ta l-to-metal co nt ac t. Small crac ks in oute r noncon-
fin ed rubber docs no t constitut e fa il ure.
Lower co ntro l arm bushings may be visua ll y in spected by lifting
the car on a ho ist a nd inspect in g by re moving the fro nt whee ls. Ir
fa il ure ex ists. replace bushing as reco mm ended in the Serv ice
Manual.
Drive Belts
In spect al l dri ve be lt s forevidence of c ut s and c racks a nd replace. if
necessa ry. C hec k ro uting to ma ke s ure th e re is no int erre rence
between the belt a nd ot he r e ngine compone nt s. C heck be lt s for
prope r te nsio n a nd adjus t, if necessa ry. acco rding to the spec ifica-
