may

inconvenience

encountered.
AM Reception
Fading
~
Fading
is
due to
a
significant decrease in
signal st
rength
under
overpasses. on d is tant stations. a
nd
beh
ind
tall bu ildings in
downtown
areas.
Static
-
Static
may be expe rienced unde
r
weak sig
nal
of off sta
tion
conditio
ns
a
nd
is hea
rd
as a "crackling" or
"popping"
no
ise
in the
radi
o speaker. This is
due to
electrical disturban
ces. s uc
h
as eng
in
e
ignition.
powe
r
lines.
neon
signs,
thunderstorm
s,
etc.
Night
time " whistles"
and
loss of
station - AM
rad io waves trave
l
seve ral hundred miles
further
at
night than during the day permit-
ting you to
listen
to distant clear
c
hann el
stations.
However, these
same
waves
also cause
other
t han clea
r channel
s tatio ns to
compete
for the
same channe
l
on
your
mdio
dial resulting
in
whistles
and
blocking
of
ot her stations.
Crosstalk

the
reception
of more

one
stalion

FM Reception
FM Flutter -

Cancellation
- Ca ncellation
is
the
res
ult
of
reflected
rad io waves
ca ncelling
the
no
rmal
unrefle
cted
signal.

s is simila
r
to
rippl
es
in
water
runn
ing
into
each othe
r and
caus ing ca
lm
spots.
Cancell
at
ion
mo
st
ofte
n
occurs in metropolitan
a reas,
but
can
also
be present in
hilly
terrain o
r
o
n
de pressed
roadways.
The noises are
similar to
those
caused by F lutter.
FM Ca
pture
-
Capture
usually
occ
urs
whe
n
yo
u
are tu ned to a weak
station and
pass
near
th
e towe
r
ofa
stron
ge
r
signal.
T he
radio
may
sw itc
h
between
stat ions
and the
signa
l
becomes mixed
o
r di
storted.
If
you
have
an FM
rece ive
r
yo
u
will expe rience
several
impo rtant
differences
in
the receptio
n of
AM and FM signals. FM
can
be
received
up
to
approx imate
ly
25 mi les from
the
stat
ion
,
as you
reach
the
limi
ts of
a
sta
t
ions signal
the
vo
lume
remains consta
nt
but
inte rfe rence
noi
se increases.

M
and FM
Stereo
give
a more
faithful reproduction
of
sO
llnd and
reject
static
from power
lines,
traffic
lights.

Tips For Obtaining Best Reception

Even a
slight

noise or d istortion.
Turning
the tone con lrollo a
ll
ow
more
bass
tones
will
often
redu
ce
di stortion.
FM
in
the automobi le is
no
l
entirely stat
ic
free.
If
so
me stations
are
always noisy whe
n
driv ing
in
ce
rt
a
in
a reas. then
the
noise
must be
