7.1 GigE Vision

7.1.1 Choosing the right Network Interface Card (NIC)

It is strongly recommended to use PCI Express based Gigabit Ethernet NICs supporting so called Jumbo
Frames or Jumbo Packages . NICs based on the old interface standard PCI do often not provide enough
guaranteed bandwidth, due to limited and shared bandwidth of the PCI bus. However, the PCI Express
bus provides guaranteed enough bandwidth for Gigabit Ethernet. Jumbo frames reduce the overhead and
workload on the target PC, reducing the amount of packets to be processed by sending a smaller count of
larger packets instead of a high count of small packets. A good choice are NICs with the Intel® Pro/1000
chipset, like the Intel
Jumbo packets / frames need to be supported by the NIC as well as the whole network
