Appendix A – Solutions
A.1 Reagent Solutions
Warning.
Before handling containers, reservoirs and delivery
systems
that
contain
standards, review the Material Safety Data Sheets to
familiarize yourself with handling precautions, dangers
and emergency procedures.
Take care if cleaning any spillages and observe all
relevant safety instructions – see Section 1, page 3.
General cleaning of the instrument must be carried
out using a damp cloth only; mild detergent can be
used as a cleaning aid. Do not use Acetone or any
organic solvents.
Observe all Health & Safety procedures for handling
chemicals.
A volume of 2.5 l of each reagent solution maintains the analyzer
in operation for a minimum of three months. The bottles and
associated tubing are color-coded to identify each reagent.
Contact your local ABB representative for further information
about reagent solutions.
A.2 Secondary Calibration Solutions
Note. The high purity water used for diluting the standard
solution should contain less than 1 ppb SiO
possible to obtain and the silica concentration is known,
make allowance for the background level in the high purity
water when calculating the actual silica concentration of the
standard.
The value (in ppb) must be entered in the analyzer – see
Section 7.5, page 47.
Note. The accuracy of the analyzer over its total range is
governed by the choice of the secondary standard solution
value. For example, an analyzer calibrated at 200 ppb,
would not be very accurate at 2000 ppb.

Choose a secondary solution concentration close to the point
where the greatest accuracy is required. Do not use solutions
containing less than 50 ppb silica because solution preparations
below this level can cause significant inaccuracy.
A stock solution of 1000 mg l
of the following 3 ways:
1. The preferred method:
purchase a 1000 mg l
proprietary chemical supplier,
or
2. From sodium fluorosilicate:
a. Dissolve 3.133 (±0.001) g of sodium fluorosilicate

900 ml of high purity water. Ensure all solids have
dissolved fully by stirring the solution for several hours.
b. Transfer the solution to a 1 liter volumetric flask and
make up to the mark with more high purity water.
c. Store the solution in a polythene bottle.
or
3. From sodium metasilicate
a. Dissolve 3.530 (±0.001) g of sodium metasilicate
pentra hydrate (Na
available) in approximately 900 ml of high purity water.
Ensure all solids have dissolved fully by stirring the
solution for several hours.
b. Transfer the solution to a 1 liter volumetric flask and
make up to the mark with more high purity water.
c. Store the solution in a polythene bottle.
Note.
Store all standard solutions in tightly stoppered
polyethylene bottles.
The stock solutions of 1000 ppm remain stable for
approximately one year.
Contact your local ABB representative for further information
about secondary calibration solutions.
