MIB
Management Information Base. A database describing objects that can be
managed by SNMP systems.
MPANL
Multiservice Passport Access Network Link. Synonymous with PANL.
Law
Mu-Law. A Pulse Code Modulation (PCM), non-linear digital voice coding
and companding method associated with T1 type high-speed linear
transmission. Commonly used in North America and Japan.
multicast
To transmit information to a group of recipients via a single transmission by
the source.
NAC
Network Address Client. A program resident on a Passport 4400 that resolves
addresses of locally-dialed phone numbers. It communicates with the NAS on
a remote Passport 4400 to resolve local address requests. (The NAS can reside
on the same Passport 4400 as the NAC requesting information.)
NAS
Network Address Server. An application that resolves network addresses of
locally-dialed phone numbers that are not resolved in either the local table or
the local cache.
neighbor
Neighbors in an OSPF network are other OSPF units.
network mask
A 32-bit value that masks (or causes the bridge/router to ignore) portions of a
packet's address. This technique allows the administrator to subdivide the
logical network from the IP address.
node
An addressable device connected to a network at a single location.
