    Preface The Norstar VoIP Gateway is an accessory that provides up to four IP telephony trunks for a Norstar system. These IP telephony trunks allow you to establish voice calls to other IP telephony enabled telephones systems using a data networking connection. Examples of IP telephony enabled telephone systems are a Business Communications Manager system or another Norstar KSU equipped with a Norstar VoIP Gateway.

With this functionality you can establish calls to other IP Telephony enabled telephones systems, such as another Norstar system with a VoIP Gateway or a Business Communications Manager, using your data network.

    Position the long bracket so that the holes in the bracket line up with the two empty screw holes on the VoIP Gateway. Use the screws found in the VoIP Gateway packaging to attach the long bracket to the left side of the VoIP Gateway.

    Insert the peg on the short bracket into the third air vent down on the column of air vents nearest the front panel. Swivel the bracket so that the side of the bracket is aligned with the base of the VoIP Gateway and the hole in the bracket line up with the empty screw hole.

    Read and follow installation instructions carefully. Only qualified service personnel may install this equipment. Connect a 2-wire line cord to one of the RJ-11 connectors on the rear of the VoIP Gateway. Figure 5 shows the connections on the rear of the VoIP Gateway.

    In most installations, the Emergency Line is not required. Normally, PSTN lines are already available on the Norstar system and can be used when the VoIP Gateway is not functioning. As well, you can configure the Norstar system to have an Emergency Telephone that can be used when the Norstar system is not functioning or there is a power failure.

    Connect the other end of the AC power cable to the wall outlet. After connecting power to the VoIP Gateway, the Ready and LAN LEDs on the front panel turn to green after a self-testing period of about 20 seconds. Any malfunction changes the Ready LED to red.

    Connect your computer to the VoIP Gateway using one of the following two methods. • Use an Ethernet cross-over cable to connect the network card on your computer to the RJ-45 jack on the VoIP Gateway. • Use a standard Ethernet cable to connect the network card on your computer to a port on a network hub.

    When configuring IP telephony, you need to ensure that the port settings are correctly configured to pass IP telephony packets through any network firewalls between the VoIP Gateway and the other IP telephony endpoint. full-duplex transmission Simultaneous two-way separate transmission in both directions.
