2.1 Engine Operation Outline

This section explains the functions and operating principles of the
EPSON Perfection V700 Photo Scanner. This model has two scanning
engines, the Photo scanner in the unit base and the TPU scanner in the
lid, each consisting of a Carriage Unit and a Carriage Mechanism.

2.1.1 Carriage Unit

The Carriage Unit consists of the ISN Board, Inverter Board, Lamps
(light source), Mirror/Lens Mechanism, Glass Plate, and Solenoid.

ISN Board contains the alternating six-line color CCD (R, G, B
independent) sensor, and its control and drive circuits.
Inverter Board converts DC to AC and boosts the voltage to generate
the current necessary to power the Lamps.
Lamps used as the primary light source are white cool-cathode
fluorescent lamps. If the light output becomes unstable, the Panel LED
flashes and the scanner enters standby mode until it becomes stable.
Mirror/Lens mechanism. The lamp light reflected off the scanned
document passes through the Mirror/Lens mechanism in the Carriage
Unit for correction of the beam axis before it reaches the CCD Sensor.
The R, G, and B light components are extracted by the processing
capabilities of the Color CCD Sensor itself, not by switching between
the R, G and B of the light source as in other models.
Glass Plate compensates for the wavelength difference between the
infrared light and visible light when the Digital ICE function is used.
Solenoid moves the Glass Plate into or out of the beam path, as
applicable.
