Disassem bly
1. R em ove differential side bearings by placing J-22912
under bearings and supporting plates on a press bed. A pply
force to pilot plug J -8 107-3 to drive the case from the
bearing.
U se care not to damage case hubs with tool J-22912.
2. R em ove the ring gear bolts and the ring gear. Tap
the ring gear with a soft-faced hamm er to free it from the
case.
3. Scribe both case halves for reassembly in sam e
position.
4. R em ove bolts holding case halves together, as shown
in figure 3F.
5. Tap lightly on top half o f case to free it from the
bottom half. R em ove top h alf o f case.
6. Lift out all internal parts.

Inspection
1. Clean all gears and bearings in solvent. Inspect cups,
races and rollers for scoring, chipping or evidence o f
excessive wear.
2. Inspect ring gear teeth and m achined surfaces.
Exam ine fit o f internal gears.
3. Inspect pinion cross-shaft.
4. R eplace parts as required.
D R IV E P IN IO N
Rem oval and D isassem bly
1. R em ove differential as previously outlined.
2. Check pinion bearing preload as described under
"Drive Pinion - Installation and Adjustm ent." If there is no
preload reading, check for looseness o f pinion assem bly by
shaking the com panion flange. Looseness indicates the need
for bearing replacement.
3. Install H older J-8614-11 on flange by using tw o bolts
w ith flat washers, as show n in figure 5F. Position J-86 14-11
on flange so that the four notches are toward the flange.
4. R em ove pinion nut and washer. D iscard pinion nut
and use a new one upon reassembly.
5. Thread end o f J-8614-3 into sm all O .D . end o f J-
8614-2. Then with J-8614-11 installed as in step 3, insert
J-8614-2 into J-8614-11 and turn it 1 /8 o f a turn to locked
position. R em ove flange by turning J-8614-3 while holding
J -8 6 14-22 as shown in figure 6F.
6. R em ove drive pinion from carrier. It m ay be
necessary to tap on the pinion w ith a soft faced hammer.
7. W ith a long drift tap on inner race o f outer pinion
bearing , to rem ove pinion oil seal, slinger, gasket, outer
pinion cone and roller and shim pack. Tag shim pack for
reassembly.
8. Should inspection indicate necessity, pinion bearing
cups can be rem oved from carrier using a long drift and
hammer. R em ove shim s and oil slinger which are located
behind the inner bearing cup. Tag shim s for reassembly.
9. R em ove rear pinion bearing using J-22912, and an
arbor press.
