5. R em ove differential and ring gear assembly from the
carrier. Exercise care that differential bearing outer races
are not dropped w hile rem oving assembly from carrier.
6. R em ove the bolts which attach the pinion bearing
retainer to the carrier.
7. R em ove the pinion and bearing assembly from the
carrier. It may be necessary to drive this unit from carrier.
U se brass drift against pilot end o f pinion.
Repairs
Pinion Disassem bly
1. Clamp pinion drive flange in bench vise.
2. R em ove cotter pin, nut and washer from end o f
pinion.
3. R em ove drive flange and bearing retainer assembly
from pinion.
4. D rive oil seal from retainer. D iscard seal as new
parts should be used at assembly.
5. R em ove pinion rear bearing snap ring and press
bearing from pinion, using Tool J -1453, as shown in figure
2G.
6. Position drive pinion in an arbor press so that the
bearing is supported by two pieces o f flat steel stock as
shown in figure 3G. Place flat stock parallel to each other
and against pinion so as to pick up a large area o f bearing
outer race. Press pinion from bearing m aking sure pinion
is supported to prevent damage when removed from
bearing.
Pinion Inspection
1. W ash all parts in cleaning solvent.
2. Inspect pinion for scored, cracked, chipped or worn
teeth.
3. Inspect splines on pinion shaft for excessive wear.
4. Inspect pinion bearing assem blies for roughness,
defects or excessive wear.
Pinion Reassem bly
1.
Pack the cavity between the pinion oil seal lips with
a lithium -base EP lubricant to provide initial lubrication
and to aid in inserting pinion flange.

2. Press the oil seal into the reatiner. Position seal lips
toward the pinion bearing, using T ool J-22281 as show n in
figure 4G.
3. Install the pinion rear bearing assem bly on pinion
shaft m aking sure that cham fered side o f inner race seats
against shoulder on pinion shaft. Then install pinion bearing
lock ring using T ool J -1364 as show n in figure 5G.
4. To install pinion front bearing, position the one-piece
double row ball bearing on pinion shaft, so that extended
portion o f inner race is toward pinion head. Then, using a
suitable length o f 2 inch pipe, press bearing onto shaft until
it seats against the pinion head.
W hen pressing bearing on pinion, exercise care to
prevent damage to ground surface o f pilot.
5. Slide oil seal retainer on pinion shaft, then tap drive
flange onto pinion splines.
6. Clamp drive flange in a bench vise and install flange
washer and nut. Torque to specifications and install cotter
pin w ithout backing o ff on nut.
