Removal of Converter

1. W ith transmission in cradle o f portable jack, remove
J -2 1366 and then converter assembly by pulling straight out.

Installing
H olding
transmission and place into H olding Fixture, J-3289-20,
w ith manual shaft facing bench and oil pan side up. (Figure
7A 1-15).
NOTICE:
D o not over torque fixture holding screw.
NOTICE:
Cleanliness is an important factor in the
overhaul of the transmission. Before attem pting any
disassembly operation, the exterior o f the transmission
should be thoroughly cleaned to prevent the possibility
o f dirt entering the transmission internal m echanism .
During inspection and re-assembly, all parts should be
thoroughly cleaned with cleaning fluid and then air
dried. Wiping cloths or rags must not be used to dry
parts.
NOTICE:
D o not use solvents on neoprene seals,
com position-faced clutch plates or thrust washers as
they may dissolve or damage.

SEALS

If any Teflon seal rings are damaged (distorted, cut,
scored, etc.), or do not rotate freely in their groove, and
replacement is necessary, proceed as follows:
1. R em ove and discard old angle cut seal rings; full
circle rings must be cut off.
2. Inspect seal ring groove for burrs or damage.
3. W hen installing angle cut seal rings, do nQt over­
stretch. M ake sure cut ends are in same relation as cut.

4. N ew angle cut or full circle teflon seal rings may
appear to be distorted after being installed. Once exposed
to normal transmission oil temperatures, the new seal rings
will return to their normal shape and fit freely in their bores.
5. The seal rings allow for a free fit in their bores after
operation. The free fit o f the rings in their bores does not
indicate leakage during operation.
SNAP RINGS
D o not over expand snap rings when rem oving or
installing.
THRUST WASHER SURFACES
The thrust washers and thrust bearings will polish the
surfaces they protect. This is not to be considered damaged
part because o f this condition.

EXTERNAL PARTS

Rem oval

1. R em ove oil pan and discard gasket.
2. R em ove oil screen and discard gasket. (Figure 7A1-
17).
NOTICE:
The tw o oil screen attaching bolts are about
10mm (3 /8 " ) longer than the control valve assembly
attaching bolts, and they are not interchangeable.
3. Governor Pressure Switch (Torque Converter Clutch
M odel)
a. R em ove lead wire from pressure sw itch and wire
clips.
b. U sing a 1-1/16" oil sending unit socket, rem ove
governor pressure switch. (Figure 7A 1-18A )
