Before fully seating the assembly onto the Front Head,
be sure the clutch coil terminals are in the proper location
in relation to the com pressor and that the three protrusions
on the rear o f the clutch coil align with the locator holes
in the Front Head.
6. Install the rotor and bearing assembly retainer ring
and reassemble the Clutch Plate and Hub assembly as
described in "R-4 Compressor Clutch Plate and Hub"
R eplacem ent procedure. Check to see that the clutch plate
to clutch rotor gap is .020 - .040 inches.
7. "Evacuate and Charge the Refrigerant System"

Remove and Replace
1. D ischarge the Refrigerant System" according to the
" D IS C H A R G IN G ,

2. R em ove the Front Head assem bly as described in
"R-4
Compressor

R em ove and discard the front head O-ring seal.
3. R em ove the tw o thrust washers and one belleville
w asher from the com pressor shaft. N ote the assembled
position o f the washers.
4. Install a new thrust washer on the com pressor shaft
w ith the thrust washer tang pointing "up" (Figure ID -105).
5. Install the new belleville washer on the shaft with
the high center o f the washer "up".
6. Install the remaining thrust washer on the shaft with
the tang pointing "down" (Figure I D - 105).
7. Lubricate the three washers w ith clean 525 viscosity
refrigerant oil and assemble the Front Head and new O-ring
onto the com pressor as described in "R-4 Compressor Front
Head" R eplacem ent procedure.

Remove
1. "Discharge the Refrigerant System" according to the

2. R em ove the Front H ead assembly as described in
"R-4

Discard front head O-ring.
3. Place the Front Head assembly on tw o blocks, as
shown in Figure I D - 106, and use Main Bearing R em over
J-24896 to drive the Main Bearing out o f the Front Head.
Replace
1. Place the Front Head "with neck-end down" on a
flat, solid surface.
2. A lign the new M ain Bearing and the Bearing
Installer J-24895 squarely with the bearing bore o f the Front

Head and drive the bearing into the Front Head. The
Installer J-24895 m ust seat against the Front Head to insert
the bearing to the proper clearance depth (see Figure 1D-
107).
3. A ssem ble the Front Head to the cylinder, using a
new O-ring as described in "R-4 Compressor Front Head"
