A traffic storm is the result of an excessive number of broadcast, multicast, or
unknown unicast messages simultaneously transmitted across a network by a
single port. Forwarded message responses can overload network resources and
might cause the network to time-out.
The switch measures the incoming broadcast/multicast/unknown unicast packet
rate per port and discards packets when the rate exceeds a defined value. Storm
control can be enabled or disabled per interface.
Use the Storm Control page to enable and configure storm control on switch
interfaces. To display this page, click Security > Storm Control in the navigation
window.
Storm control is disabled by default on all ports for all packet types. To edit storm
control settings for a port:
Select the port to configure and click Edit.
For broadcast, multicast, and unicast traffic, specify the following parameters for
the selected port:
Mode—Select Enable to turn on storm control protection for the traffic type.
Rate Threshold Type—Select how the switch determines whether traffic
exceeds the threshold:

Percent—Traffic is dropped when it exceeds a percent of the capability
on the link.

pps—Packets per second. Traffic is dropped when it exceeds a packet-
per-second threshold on the link.
Rate Threshold—Specify the maximum rate at which packets are
forwarded. If the Rate Threshold Type is Percent, then enter a percent of the
total port capability (0%–100%). If the Rate Threshold Type is pps, then enter
a packet per second rate (0–14880000). Ports that operate at 10Mpbs,
100Mbps, and 1000Mbps have a maximum throughput of 14880, 148800,
1488000 packets per second correspondingly.
NOTE: The actual rate of ingress traffic required to activate the Storm Control
is based on the size of incoming packets and the hard-coded average
packet size (512 bytes). A packet-per-second rate is calculated, as the
