Patterned Grays
Before the Windows Printing System, Patterned Grays was the only halftoning
method that Windows-based applications could achieve
Patterned Grays converts the gray shades in a graphic or text to a pattern of black
dots on a white background. The darker the gray, the greater the number of black
dots printed in a given area. The eye tends to merge the dots to see tones of gray, as
well as solid black and solid white. Look closely at a photograph in a newspaper,
and you'll see the dots.
Choose Patterned Grays for medium-speed printing of medium-quality images.
This option works well for electronically generated graphics, which typically have
fewer shades of gray than scanned photographs. Printing takes longer than a Solid
Black and White version of the same image, but the image will contain more detail.
Diffuse Images
Diffuse Images reproduces the most shades of gray from the original image. Like
Patterned Grays, this halftoning method uses dots, but behind-the-scenes
processing by the Windows Printing System randomizes placement of the dots to
make them more subtle.
Choose this option for high, near-photographic quality with scanned images of
continuous-tone graphics. However, keep in mind that printing may take longer.
Choosing Default resets the grayscale method to Patterned Grays,
NOTE
and resets Brightness and Contrast to 50.
