Lubrication & Maintenance
Filling Oil
CAUTION
Ensure the housing has the correct oil level. A low oil level causes
a lack of lubrication and reduces durability. An oil level that is too
high causes excessive splashing and leads to overheating.
Damage to components can result.
1.
Ensure the vehicle is parked on a level surface.
2.
Remove the oil fi ll plug from the case. Figure 9.4.

Fill the transfer case with the recommended oil type and quantity.
Filling should be done slowly to provide enough time to ensure the
oil fl ows through the complete assembly. DO NOT OVER FILL.
4.
Operate the transfer case by driving the vehicle at least 0.31
miles (0.5 km).
5.
Perform the previously described steps for fi lling the oil twice to
be sure the cooling circuit is vented completely and the oil level
is correct. (This includes the transfer case oil quantity plus the
theoretical amount of oil in the cooling circuit.)
6.
Verify oil is at the proper level when it is even with the bottom of
the oil fi ll plug opening. "Checking Oil" on page 48.
7.
Clean the oil fi ll plug and tighten to 60±7 lbs-ft (80±10 Nm).

Operating Temperature
The operating temperature of the transfer case should not exceed
250°F (120°C). Extensive operation at temperatures exceeding 250°F
will result in rapid breakdown of the oil and may shorten the transfer
case life.
The following conditions may contribute to excessive oil temperature:

A vehicle remaining stationary for extended periods while
operating the power take-off.
A vehicle which is used in tropical or desert conditions.
A vehicle where extended bodywork or an accumulation of dirt
and plant material may shield the case from air ventilation and
circulation.
