Oil Leak

Inspect the axle housing
welds for cracks or leaks.
No
If you find weld cracks,
contact Meritor for repair
welding procedures.

the carrier in
the axle housing.
Yes
Damaged?
No
Inspect the
breather.
Yes
Breather
clogged?
No
Inspect the
pinion seals
for leaks.
Yes
Seal
leaking?
No
Inspect the
carrier-to-housing
joint for leaks.
Joint
leaking?
Yes
Drain and inspect
the lubricant.
Refer to MM 1.
Remove the carrier
from the axle housing.
Refer to Section 2.
Remove the carrier
from the axle housing.
Repair the carrier
or install a
remanufactured
carrier. Refer
to Section 2.
Clean or replace the
breather. A clogged
breather can cause
a seal leak.
Replace the pinion
seal with a
unitized seal.
Replace the pinion
cage O-ring with
a new O-ring.
Fill the carrier with the
correct amount of the
specified lubricant.
Refer to Section 6.
Clean the seal area.
Test drive the vehicle
to confirm that the
leak is repaired.
Return the vehicle to
service.

Diagnostics
Clean and prepare the
housing and carrier
flanges. Apply the correct
gasket or silicone.
Refer to Section 3.
Install the carrier.
Refer to Section 4.
Fill the carrier with
the correct amount
of the specified lubricant.
Refer to Section 6.
Test drive the vehicle to
confirm that the leak is
repaired. Return the
vehicle to service.
